Two platforms that contacted me to give expert feedback on AI-generated physics output independently informed me that their client (i.e. the AI company) is pausing the project, indefinitely.

Lack of funds?

Lack of funds?

If the scope of the pause is "the project" and not "the company", there are other options:

  • Astra is good enough as a judge and they don't need ya (sorry)
  • They got acquired
  • They pivoted
  • They decided feedback is for dinosaurs and one must yolo or go extinct with the boomers

Somehow, all these options feel like positive outcomes, accelerating their demise.

A friend went to a talk about VC, and they said a lot of companies raise on impressive revenue numbers but have 100% churn; ie lots of people trying things out then realizing there isn't much value in another "harness."

So, like, a lot of people signing up for a month or two, but then not sticking with the product afterwards?

Yep, and willing to pay a high monthly fee - initially.

Huh, interesting. Yeah, I was getting a number of these emails, and was semi-tempted to try it out. If I was less busy at the time, I may have given it a go.

I haven't received any emails about a pause though. Did you actually respond to any of those emails?

reply

Yeah, the potential pay was too good to ignore.

I joined an onboarding Zoom call with an AI bro who had no idea how he was supposed to check my technical ability, still ended up inside two Slacks where I was assigned some tasks.

One had 70,000 people in it, and it was quickly obvious we were disposable, with many people complaining about not getting paid, so I never started any of the assignments (basically, was supposed to record myself solving a specialized task... but didn't feel like breaking the IP rules from my employer, nor had any time recently to work on something unrelated at night or over the weekend).

The other one was much more selective (I guess only tenure(track) PhD's), but the highly specialized task I was assigned came on very short notice while I was away with the family on the weekend, with expected delivery two days after. The list of problems they were trying to get us to solve are holygraal problems in physics.

China won the AI war- because they have the power.
