I also grow them in planters, though they tend to take longer to bear fruit; ideally, they should be planted in the ground with plenty of sun. Propagation is best done via cuttings, although I have successfully planted them by mixing seeds with clay balls and compost and scattering them across the land (nendo dango)
they are a type of cactus that grows like a vine. you can grow them most places that are hot and don't have too much moisture. I had a beautiful one growing here in Texas, but it got so big I couldn't bring it in when the cold temps of winter came, and it got frozen. Very sad.
