No, that's not what I claimed. I think one misunderstanding is definitely that we don't have a misunderstanding, lol. Anyway, no need to continue this thread, we can just forget about it. Fwiw, I'm pulling your leg a bit because of your audacity to put a judgment call on a difference of opinion. I just disagree with your rationale. And I do so because I was once very much thinking what you're thinking, and then put it to practice. And failed.
Opti gave up at the 6th language. And I think 14 came after where I didn't try to master it, but just focus on the essentials. Because it didn't feel sustainable anymore. Right now I'm in a place where, when I try to speak the local language (to a young person), they switch to English because its the better language between us. That's what I mean with "common language". Whatever is the least sum(pain over participants). I think that that is in the end the only practical and sustainable solution, because it will naturally flow there, unless participants are out of principle refusing to converse in a foreign language. Most often, even in France, you can be successful by trying, failing, and finding a middle ground, and no one thinks the less of it.
