Old school newspaper classifieds

Right so the first is fringe so that's foreign on its own, the second is ads. Which may be why there are waves of assmilking bots here?

reply

Stacker News = yellow pages?

reply

Orange pages. haha.

But yeah... post cost is margin for a perceived return in classifieds. That's exactly what the bots do: tokens + post cost = margin, anyone not paying attn and zapping = returns.

this gets to the idea of downzaps putting accounts "in debt"

i've been downzapping some bot accounts for days now (although you and k00b often beat me to it) and it seems like they still manage to eek by. But if each of our downzaps added to the post cost of their next post, it might make the margin collapse more quickly.

This would certainly get weaponized by some users against others. So maybe it gets capped at some low amount (500 sats?)

reply

If you’re making arbitrary caps, then you probably haven’t quite landed on the right mechanism yet.

Maybe downzaps should be deducted from rewards. That pairs the punishment for doing something antagonistic with the reward for being protagonistic.

i wonder how many bots are sustained on rewards sats? my mental model at the moment is that they catch the odd zap from unsuspecting stackers and then coast off those sats for quite some time.

the arbitrary number is regrettable, the cap could be expressed in as some log function so one user couldn't bury another beneath a 100k sat debt. I think most of the bots won't spent 500 sats for a single post, or if they do, they won't do it for long. But a human user who is disliked by another might be willing to pay 500 sats (of course this creates a huge UX problem: "Why the heck is this costing so much this time?!")

reply

Why not bring trust back?

That did a nice job of burying junk accounts.

I also think you should consider adding a small platform fee to posts, maybe just one sat at first but it’s a lever you could use.

At most 2-3, but I think the more realistic answer is: zero.

Yeah that's a getting-trolled trap, I think, and it will increase ad-hominem, which I think is a problem we do have here sometimes (not as much as elsewhere though)

My current anti-ad-hominem solution is a little plugin script that hides an item after I downzap. That way I have said my say and I no longer need to get bothered by it. It would be a good replacement for some mutes I have. My downzap helps ranking decisions - even if it is a mild downzap - but I'm also not annoyed by crap I already downzapped. Also prevents zap wars (to a point - can always wage anon/sybil-zapwar)

I think the solution should not be sought in punishing people for getting downzapped. My biggest downzaps were for hiding my badges... it's already punishment enough that I got downzapped to oblivion and I spent effort for nothing.
