The department of defense is now the department of war (stupid), the Gulf of Mexico is now the Gulf of America (less stupid but unnecessary) . You can just name things whatever you want and if people don't like it- cry harder.

Will football be next?

If Team USA wins the World Cup should the rest of the world acquiesce and accept the sport being called by its proper American name- SOCCER?

The department of defense is now the department of war (stupid)

Not at all. It's the classic name and way more honest. It's easily less stupid than gulf of America.

reply

I will grant you it is way more honest but it would be nice to aim to be something other than war mongers.

reply

Yes
To be fair, they surely didn't rename it with the purpose of being more honest lol

It was an accidental honesty

reply

Oh shit. This tweet cracked me up

reply

Haha. Wow if soccer was like a triple threat match in wrestling it would be amazing.

We should add that one to the list @Undisciplined. If we aren't careful we might not just make soccer great for the first time, we might actually make it the greatest.

reply

...then name it Trumpball

Great minds

That is clearly an experiment worth running.

reply

I've played chess on a tri-board like that. Its amazing... And also really stupid: Dominant strategy is to gang up on one party

reply

what's soccer...? Asking for a stupid Europoorean friend

reply

It’s a lot like handball but with feet

Nice. Twice as good as football.

reply

More if they let other animals play

reply

strange, then, that it's not called football

reply

Maybe because the players typically have socks on

Quick history:

  • In the mid-19th century in England, several versions of "football" existed (different rules for different schools and clubs).
  • In 1863, the Football Association (FA) was founded in London to create standardized rules. This version became known as "association football" to distinguish it from other codes like rugby football.
  • People started shortening "association" to "assoc" → which naturally slang-ified into "soccer" (similar to how "rugby" became "rugger").

The term "soccer" was commonly used in England itself in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, alongside "football."Why "soccer" stuck in some places but not others:

  • In the United Kingdom, "football" eventually became the dominant term for the association game (especially after the sport exploded in popularity). "Soccer" faded in everyday British use.
  • In countries where another code of football was already dominant (especially American football in the U.S., and to some extent Canadian/Australian football), people adopted "soccer" to avoid confusion.
  • So Americans, Canadians, Australians, etc., call it soccer largely because they already had their own popular "football" sports.

Bonus fun facts:

  • The word "football" itself originally just meant games played on foot (as opposed to on horseback).
  • Many other countries just call it "football" or a local version (fútbol, Fußball, futebol, etc.).
  • Even today, some older British people or in certain contexts (like "soccer mom") still use the word soccer without issue.

In short: "Soccer" = slang from "Association Football" — a very English invention that became the global disambiguator outside the UK.

Honestly the lovers of beautiful game don't get to call it the same, why bother with the rebel child of Britain calling it whatever they want

We're all of them and the only sport that truly unites the world on hatting refs/VAR

in Brasil we also reference it as "the old violent Briton game"

reply

This doesn’t sound right. Maybe @Aardvark can enlighten us about the real origin story.

reply

This would be a great purpose for the triumphant return of the @Aardvark

reply

There you have it. It was the Europeans own doing.

reply

I don't know how it exists or why it exists but the fact is it does and if the sport is going to be great for the first time it should be called by its proper name- Soccer. Wouldn't want to confuse it with an already great sport known as Football.

reply

you're right, whatever the USA team is putting on the field in the World Cup is so abysmal as to be distinguished by a separate name. (Almost as bad as Canada... they out yet?)

reply

Not yet. We play Morocco on Saturday. Is that even a real country? I remember being a teen in high school and an attractive new female student said she was from Morocco and I had no idea what that was (apparently geography wasn't my best subject) but I thought it must be a great place. Haha

reply

barely. Much like saskatchewan

reply

What if Canada wins?

reply

Then the playing surface will have to switch to ice and players will have to wear skates. We will call it sockey. The bloodshed is part of the fun.

I'd also vote for allowing sticks to beat each other. Maybe aesthetically pleasing, curved ones. Much like hurling, but Canadian of course.

reply

I like it. Good idea.

Hahaha , I love this. No matter what you call it. It's fútbol for me! Enjoy the beautiful game. Especially tonight where I could watch the return of Spain. All players getting better at right moment.

reply

Spain was amazing. People are paying insane prices to watch Ronaldo in Toronto tonight. Cheapest ticket is 2700.

With Trump administration, every thing gets a new name especially if America wins

reply

Should they keep soccer or call it Trumpball?

reply
42 sats \ 0 replies \ @Zion 2 Jul

Trumpball will definitely be it :)

reply

Why not just call it American football like we do here in Europe? Honestly, I think it’d even be better for the Americans. Having 'American' right in the name sounds way cooler, right? Like Gulf of America.

reply

How about Americaball? Even better.

reply

That doesn't sound right. fUSAball ? ahahah

reply

Soccer and Football are used interchangeably here... I think Soccer in the US is what the rest of the world call football. And football in the US is what the rest of the world call rugby.

reply
And football in the US is what the rest of the world call rugby

Only goes to show this ominous "rest of the world" has no clue what rugby is.
