Now you can optionally register for Signal without a phone number. Phone-numberless registration requires a small one-time fee to help prevent spam, but this in-app purchase is never directly associated with the new Signal account. We sincerely appreciate your help beta testing this new feature!
We have plans to add more payment methods, but currently only offer Play Store in-app payments, which requires Play Services.
@optimism I can recall you saying that you have been awaiting this... but also probably not this
I wonder if they'll ever grow a pair and integrate lightning payments.
Just saw this. Looks like Optimism was right that you must use Play Store to make the $3 payment. They claim they use some kind of woo woo zk stuff to keep your payment details separate from your signal account, but I don't know how to evaluate the truth of such a claim.
And in response to a question elsewhere, no Keet is not open source yet.
I've seen that code, it's mostly sitting in the
libsignaldependency and I've seen them doing some hardening on it and I suspect that when they started assessing it, it lead to some beneficial key derivation hardening too.https://github.com/signalapp/libsignal/tree/main/rust/zkcredential
thx!
Yeah I was a bit disappointed when spotted this in the code.
Try making a new google account without a phone number. 🤣
Some people keep talking about just using Keet or SimpleX, but Signal is just more user friendly and you might know some people that got on Signal with the traditional phone number registration, but you didn’t get on Signal because of the phone requirement.
I do think that Signal should implement cryptocurrency, probably Lightning or USDC would be the first things they think of but maybe they would add XMR too. Also they should replace their built-in crypto wallet with something that’s not the defunct MobileCoin (MOB), instead of people having to use forks like https://radar.chat
Cool.....thanks for sharing
