When did Nostr switch from: users decide which relays to publish their notes on... To: client devs and relay operators will just spaff all of your publications absolutely everywhere without your permission?
Nostr's Chief Android Officer (long term funded by OpenSats) has declared this the new protocol, and has stated that he doesn't care what users think.
For conservative users that only specified one or two relays to publish to, is there now any way to delete stuff that's published? Do data protection regulations apply?
Is there any way to leave Nostr???
How about DM's? Have all DM's been propagated as well? Does this mean that all users DM's are now vulnerable to a harvest-now-decrypt-later attack either post quantum or client key leakage?
The obvious irony is the DM's don't even work a lot of the time, but while the intended recipient has never received them, they may be time-capsuled forever.
Are Nostr payments also public forever?
Freedom tech was supposed to be more respectfulof users. This doesn't seem to be very sovereign.
One of the problems with nostr is that you can say it has any feature set you want because it does not specify global system behavior. So, when convenient, proponents and opponents can use one relay/client set to make a point, and another relay/client set to make an opposing point.
The problem lies in regarding nostr as a system. To its benefit and detriment it is not. It is a protocol for signing and sending and finding notes in different places, and is explicitly inconsiderate of the whole. So you can only talk about client and relay sets, and anyone describing nostr as a system, except to say variants of "nostr is not a system," is making a category mistake.
Sadly, nostr is funded primarily through grants so accountability is low so everyone talks about it like a system when convenient (systems sell), then an anti-system when convenient (systems can be criticized), and progress is impossible in that kind of noise.
I understood the nature of nostr to be public forever. I was surprised when people claimed to roll out an option to delete a nostr note. It is not possible.

Availability of content on nostr has always been in a constant superposition. You never had the guarantee that anyone would host or remove your content unless you run and only use your own relay with authentication.
But then it’s still just one copy away for someone on the whitelist, and using nostr only on your own relay isn’t that interesting.
I tried deleting all my notes in the past, but I know you can still access some of them. IIRC, there’s even a special event for “delete absolutely everything”, but the relays don’t need to respect it.
