My father-in-law passed away yesterday at 94. His daughter/my wife was with him when he passed so he didn't go alone.
Born in 1932 about, he was a child of the Depression Era. His mother (maybe out of the Chicago area) couldn't care for him, so she adopted him to her brother in the Northwest and his wife and then disappeared. It's suspected she died from starvation. It was that bad in those days.
My father-in-law grew up on a farm where kids called their pet dog, "Dog," and the horse, no surprise, "Horse." He eventually went to college some two decades later and joined the Army as an officer. He was then assigned to Vietnam, fought in the Tet Offensive among other events, and ended his commission as at Lt. Colonel from Fort Cambell Kentucky. Now with family, he moved west back to his roots, worked in the health industry until the early 1990s and was then laid off during the Bush Recession. At that point he went into full retirement and generally lived a classic American life until early 2024 when he came down with COVID.
COVID accelerated what was probably already cooking in terms of dementia and my father-in-law when into rapid cognitive decline. From assisted living to memory care within two years, it was that fast. He passed yesterday but was probably gone mentally some three weeks ago.
And now, his memory lives on in two adult kids and two grandkids.
Sorry for boring you all with details; it's processing grief.
Covid often impacted the most vulnerable more than others.
Thanks for sharing a little about him. My grandpa had a similar accelerated drop in cognition, significant change in two years. We were able to care for him at his home because my aunt was his neighbor. Hard to watch someone change like that.
dementia is rampant nowadays (accompanied by the popularity of dementia research, state-funded of course), u will start seeing more widespread forgetfullness among friends & family, dismissed as random brain fog; the infestation & intoxication are the primary culprits, enhanced by indoctrination;
people appear highly functional mainly because of the power of habit & familiarity; put them into an unfamiliar environment, and the degree of dementia/retardation will become more apparent;

Health, chemical, diet and environment all contribute, true. I think it's also more apparent because there are, just numerically, a lot more Boomers going into senior old age, and the remainder of the silent generation, like my relative, are passing now. That advanced age in great numbers makes it far more visible now how common dementia and similar are in people that we didn't see years before because, frankly, people died younger on average. The brain is not meant to age to 100 usually, and our lifestyle in the west doesn't help matters.
this is incomplete knowledge; lifespans have been effectively controlled from an indefinite number of years to a manageable number (about 80 yo, or roughly three generations - after grandpa dies, true memories of his times die with him, so history can be rewritten and/or forgotten);
furthermore, the lack of imagination to live beyond the "statistically acceptable" age compounds & spreads into other areas of life, preventing people from acting upon proper information;
finally, grieving won't solve shit - move on and start extending ur pathetic lifespan; by the way, it looks like dementia is contagious (as are neoplastic flesh conditions); it wud be prudent for u to avoid contact with those who were around the man, since he was likely heavily infested going into the final hours - it is in the best interest of the infestation to gather as many family members together as possible, in order to propagate its nests in the human population;
