I think you all make good points. Maybe "kill" was too strong, I probably should have said AI is changing what search looks like.
Google was already becoming more of a navigation tool than a discovery tool for me. AI has made finding answers much easier, but I still find myself wanting citations and links whenever the topic is important or nuanced.
I also like the idea of AI drawing more from communities like Stacker News. Firsthand experience, discussion, and disagreement are things that don't translate well into a static webpage. The challenge is making sure AI can distinguish genuine expertise from confident noise.
Maybe the future isn't AI replacing search engines. Maybe search evolves into a blend of AI summaries, trusted sources, and community knowledge.
When I do shallow research I would have otherwise used a search engine for, I ask for citations with links.
I still have issues, especially with precision. For example I had trouble earlier today finding a good link to the Bitmain firmware work reset logic to share with Kruw re: why you can't really penalize miners when they mine an old template. It was just some informational thing on something I have nothing at stake on though, so I let it be and didn't spend enormous amounts of time on it.
Mm.... I kinda feel like the traditional search engine was already dying prior to AI. I rarely discovered new links via Google anymore. To get trusted info I'd often type my search term + some other trusted website where I anticipate finding a good result.
AI, in some ways, revitalized my ability to actually search the internet for relevant answers.
