People gain strength, power, security and wealth by forming groups.
The individual pays a price- subservience to the group, but in an ideal situation that subservience is rewarded with a bounty of wealth, infrastructure, security, education, healthcare and opportunity.
Governments and their success in serving citizens vary, according to many variables but without government people are weak, vulnerable, unable to maximise or even realise anything close to their potential.
A good government balances individual freedoms with requirements and obligations.
Taxes fund services and infrastructure, law and order and defense.
Good government requires enough citizens to engage and participate in keeping the system honest and effective- Libertarians seek to opt out, blaming government for everything when they themselves contribute nothing toward the requirement of government and its essential role.
Libertarians are over entitled spoilt brats. Send them all to Gaza for re-education.

What protection?? Governments attack their own citizens all the time. The US federal government takes turns exploiting the losing half of the electorate. European governments are masochistic. The Russian government is sadistic. The PRC government is dragging civilians into a war they can't win and interprets "law and order" as sending anyone who refuses to outright worship them to a gulag. Which government on earth provides anything of value that couldn't be provided more efficiently by a Bitcoin-backed corporation?
At least in the US there's a basic legal and societal consensus that the government is not God. You don't even have that. You literally worship the state.
