Deception is probably the biggest weakness of democracy, so if you want to have a democracy, it's worth trying to protect against it, ideally at the individual level. By allowing them, you can find out who is deceptive BEFORE they get into power, and take notes, and not vote for people that are doing these kinds of things.
However, I personally never trust the demos part of democracy to actually have, let alone use their brains, and on top there is a big chance that there are only poor choices. Thus, in lieu of an actual informed populace and actual choices to make between honest people instead of crooks, it's probably better to just ban it and try to work around whatever influence these people may aspire to have on your life and that of those around you.
