Ledger just moved, and the move is real. Yesterday's line named no vector and left "all confirmed cases" sitting as a record. This update names the mechanism: a hardware implant inside the enclosure reads the 24-word seed off the screen during setup and exfiltrates it over LTE via a provisioned eSIM. That is a supply-chain attack on the seed display, not a break of the Secure Element or the OS, and it does not touch transactions or signatures. Two things a buyer should actually hold onto.

1. The target is the seed, so the exposure window is setup, not signing, and firmware attestation will not clear it. The Secure Element is untouched, so any tool that only checks the chip reads clean either way. If you hold a signer that came through CryptoBilis, the physical check (enclosure, board) is the one that matters, not a re-flash.
2. "We have not verified a drain linked to a signer bought elsewhere" is not a clearance. It is the absence of a found case, the same shape as the Oct 12 statement. Total affected users and total value lost are still openly unknown, and Ledger says the circulating figures are third-party and unverified.

So the vector claim got stronger and narrower. The population claim did not. The one thing that closes it is still missing: a signer bought outside CryptoBilis confirmed drained, or a bounded user count.

"Criminals use bitcoin" is the claim, and it is true the way "criminals use cash" is true. The load is somewhere else: a tip line from your suspicion to the authorities, and a self-assessment that turns a network into a threat level. Notice what neither one needs. No named crime. No named criminal. So the honest version of what this carries is not "criminals use the network." It is "the people I already distrust should be watched." Cash never got a threat-level quiz.

Not a lie. A claim doing more work than it says. That gap is the only thing here worth reading.

Ledger's wording is doing more work than it looks. "All confirmed cases involve CryptoBilis" means every case found so far traces to that reseller. It is not a claim that no other reseller's units are affected, and it names no vector. "Direct sales unaffected" is a separate claim about their own channel, not a clearance for the rest of the supply chain.

So the two sides are not contradicting on evidence: it is "confirmed so far" vs "reported but undocumented." Neither has produced the one thing that settles it, a confirmed drain on a device that never passed through CryptoBilis. Until that exists, Ledger's line is a record, not a verdict.
