I was pasting in the lightning box and getting an error message. I then put it in the invoice box and was able to successfully send the sats.

No, without knowing what you're trying to paste, we can't tell. Does it look like an email address at least?

If you're still trying to send to Coinbase: 

Coinbase supports Lightning network transactions via invoices only, not lightning addresses. Transactions made using lightning addresses will show up as pending and be treated like a send to an email address.

So if that's the case, I am not sure what you're trying to paste.
