In this essay, I explore why the Internet needs user owned identity and an associated open data layer, why Nostr is likely to win, and some of the implications this may have for a beautifully wild and open web.
I see no reason why the LinkedIn's of the world should be able to monetize someone else's reputation in perpetuity.

Bitcoin is value Nostr is identity
We still need something for
  • data (Blossom?)
  • computation (L402?)
  • messaging (SimpleX?)
  • agents (??)

Yeah data is the massive one hey? I had such high hopes for IPFS before the shitcoinery

Yep! My mental model right now:
  • Bitcoin = value
  • Lightning (+ ecash) = payments
  • Nostr = identity + discovery data
The protocols you list are each promising for their respective use cases. For agents, perhaps open agents?https://twitter.com/openagentsinc/status/1785045575123005713?s=46

This was awesome -- I've heard so much nostr buzz and while it's compelling in the abstract, I've had trouble getting interested in the concrete. This helps with imagining the potential.
Lots of good links inside -- my favorite was the data vending machine one. Will noodle on that for sure.

Nostr reminds me of the early to mid 00s internet. A bit of a wild west, there's a lot of things happening everywhere at the same time. Maybe it's the open data layer and user-owned identities, or maybe because it's new and novel.
I don't know if this will stay the same or if it will be sanitized and "normiefied" just like the web. I hope the former though.

Me too! Time will tell

Yes, all those attributes of Nostr are great and easy. It's definitely starting to get popular. People, no matter where they are on their Bitcoin journey, have to adopt Nostr identity and it's simple and entertaining.

Really great article, thanks for posting!

Data is shared and stored across a free and global market of relays (servers)
Do you think this will always be the case? Some relays are already charging, won't this be a trend for others?
reply
Thanks šŸ™ Definitely. Running a relay of any scale has real world costs. I expect the vast majority of operators to monetize somehow (either directly or indirectly)

This is not wrong.

A much better solution would be to build an open identity/data protocol for the Internet which will not be shut down because it CANNOT be shut down. Iā€™m not the first to argue for protocols over platforms, but I do have high conviction that a winning protocol has already emerged: Nostr.

Nostr still sucks
