is an old town gate in Flensburg, Germany, which was built around 1595. Today the landmark is used as a symbol for Flensburg.[1]
The town wall of Flensburg was built step by step from 1345 onwards.[2] A town gate, named Norder Porte, was built in the northern section of the wall.[3] At the end of the 16th century, it was replaced by the Nordertor, a building with stepped gables and archway.[4] At this time the Nordertor marked the northern boundary of the town. It was a checkpoint that was closed at night.[5]
Cool old looking gate. It’s older than America!!
Asking my German friend if they ever visited this town.
Those fortifications were important in those days and served various functions, such as regulating entry into the towns. Those massive gates were imposing—in fact, many centuries later, they still are. I would call them architectural gems, as they are still standing today.
Thanks for sharing crack
Yeah it’s nice to see historical architecture like this
I spent some time in Flensburg! I didn't see this gate though -- didn't even know about it. There are some very cool castles near there and the town itself is pretty, although probably not worth a long visit.
It's funny, I know I rode a bus with the kids up past that area to go to a beach just north of there. Probably passed the gate in the bus, but didn't know to look for it. I guess I gotta go back sometime.
hahahaha wow that is definitely cool!
Lol. Yeah all of Europe is older than America.
You know how many of those gates we got?
A LOT!
Funny to imagine a time when towns literally locked their outer gates every night at bedtime!
