2024 - snickerbar.me
For Halloween of 2024, I had been experimenting with ecash and was having a blast with stacker.news. I decided to pass out ecash tokens to the parents of trick or treaters to encourage bitcoin adoption in our neighborhood. I forked cashu.me and engaged in some coding that was way over my head and mostly a learning experience for me. The results varied from "eh" to "aight" and fun was had by all. I chronicled that spooky season in a post exposing my coding ineptitude, making a spooky crossword puzzle for stackers, iterating, mashing up Janet Yellen and Metallica to @DarthCoin's delight, and ultimately passing out small amount of sats while playing music by David Lynch on a DX-7.
It was a fun time.
2025 - They don't celebrate Halloween in Mossel Bay
South African townships have witches. I never met one, but I heard quite a bit about them, and sadly, it was mostly from scared children. I've been told that the witches are responsible for gangs, substance abuse, and general violence in the townships. What was very sad to me was the amount of talismans I saw children wearing to "protect" themselves from witches. There is a very real bondage there, and as I was in Mossel Bay for Halloween 2025, we kept it low key and at home.
My wife and I personally do believe that there is a supernatural realm, but are thoroughly convinced that talismans, incantations, and other charms do nothing to protect people from evil. So, at home, we kept our American traditions, which are solely for fun and pretend. We made costumes out of paper. The kids did trick or treat to the rooms my wife and I separated to in the two bedroom apartment. We used what was available to make little jack 'o lanterns.
And in doing so, almost burnt the place down.
If you're wondering, no, I do not recommend at this point that you fill a gem squash with kerosene soaked fire starters.
We finished the night with some kid-friendly spooky stories. Alas, last Halloween featured no caramel apples, no hayrides, no corn mazes, and worst of all, NO ECASH!
2026 - Making up for lost time
The mills of God have done their dance, and now I can...VIBE CODE! What that translates to is a whole new level of usability of this free ecash for my neighbors. Here is https://snickerbar-me.vercel.app/ for 2026.
Tonight is Trunk or Treat, and boy-howdy, do I have a treat in my trunk.
Now when someone scans a card with their phone camera, they get a temporary wallet right out of the gate with the sats already in it. There is no app or sign-up. Then, with one tap, they can move the sats to a wallet they own (Coinos, Strike, Wallet of Satoshi, Cash App, anything with a Lightning address).
Do it yourself!
So obviously, tonight will be a fun test, but I'm also using this on beggar's night, and you can too! In fact, I've also improved the UI from the issuer's side. You can watch the tokens get claimed in real time:
As promised in the title, here's your free ecash. First come, first serve.
I also made, "porch mode" so you can keep a screen up for people to scan one at a time with a little visual hooray with each claim.
Also, now you can make much bigger cashu tokens in which the QR is actually scannable. I'm thinking of making a few of them humongous so a few people can go buy a shake at Steak 'n Shake.
To get started, fund a wallet and hit **send**. Then follow the steps to making your tokens! Let me know how it goes!
Happy Halloween!
Very fun and interesting idea, I like the UI and colors too
thanks!
I like that cause even if its vibe coded you need have taste to make it look good otherwise it would be come just another AI Slop
very cool. I just helped myself to some sats. Happy Halloween to me.
I was wondering when someone was going to finally start claiming these. Thanks for not being greedy and taking the whole bowl.
I was just testing them for you.
Only three of five have been claimed, so I wouldn't blame you for raiding the pot at this point.
My wife told me I have been eating too many of the halloween treats around the house. I better not. haha
Oh man, I know that dance too.
Very cool idea!
Thanks! Let me know how it plays out if you end up making any for anybody.
Probably not this year, but I’ll try to keep it in mind for next year.
Cool idea. I'm just so suspicious of links these days, I would never click or scan it. Unfortunately, ff'ing AI bots and ad hacks are spoiling yet another holiday.
Thanks! Well, at the least it's a new idea for one more spooky campfire story this autumn then.
Ah I thought it was Paul's ecash which launches mainnet today or tomorrow, but this is calle's cashu one
A few find cashu not good from a trust perspective so not sure of the welcome you'll find and slop coding also not welcomed with open arms either 😂 but well done from me, looks like it took some time
Happy Halloween stackers! Free ecash threads like this are a great way to try Lightning wallet UX without risk. Claiming a cashu token is a one-tap experience in most wallets now.
