Pentagon, Lockheed sign F-35 deal for 850 fighter jets

The Pentagon and Lockheed Martin have announced a 10-year agreement for the production of 850 F-35 warplanes. The two sides didn’t specify a value for the deal.

The move “cements [the plane’s] role as the free world’s key front-line fighter for years ahead”, Lockheed President Jim Taiclet said on a call with investors.

F-35s – used extensively in combat during the US-Israeli war on Iran – come in three versions that can cost more than $100m per plane.

“We have fundamentally changed how we stabilize the American defence industrial base to produce at speed and scale,” top acquisition official Michael Duffey said in the Pentagon’s announcement.

The F-35 – a joint project between the United States and a number of allies – is one of the world’s most advanced military aircraft. There are more than 1,375 F-35s around the world.
