Being a parent is like walking on a bed of nails. You can never quite anticipate the sharp obstacle that threatens to derail your schedule.

The son was grouchy because his baby tooth was about to fall off. Apparently, he was wincing in so much pain that he skipped all meals yesterday. After dismissal (and before my lunch), he asked whether he could visit the school dentist. Apparently, he had sought her help to extract his tooth during recess, but the dentist declined because she needed him to obtain my consent.

So, I escorted him to the dentist. Luckily, I didn’t have an afternoon meeting, so I could just wait for him outside the clinic. I was also impressed by his problem-solving skills. In this era of AI prevalence, I wonder if he would be able to develop the problem-solving competencies required for him to find a job. If this early promise were any indication, I guess I need not worry so much.

Are school dentists a normal thing? I've never heard of that.

reply

common.
but it’s not like the dentist comes to our school every day. she has a roving schedule and rotates her days among several schools. it’s a Ministry of Health initiative. has been like this since I was young

Is it mostly for dental checkups or is she doing procedures like fillings on site?

reply

I think she is qualified to do routine fillings. If the dental work required is beyond her skill level, then she will refer the student to see a specialist at some centralised dental clinic
