- when enough people have/use it
- when it's easy enough to transact with/turn into transactable form (e.g., like gold bullion dealer in every city etc)

What's funny is that trying to sell gold bullion sounds like such a headache.

but at least you're vaguely aware that you can rock up in basically any city in America, find a dealer, get completely ripped off on the spread, but at least get $$ for your Eagles or Krugerrands or whatever pretty much immediately.
