Your mom taught economics?
If she had, it wouldn't be surprising that she knew who Friedman was.
it's not a trick question
I don't understand the confusion. My mom is a normal person, who has read zero economics (other than some of my work). That's why it's remarkable that she was familiar with Friedman and why that's a sign of his cultural impact.
I'm sorry I assumed both your parents were teachers
I am impressed that she knows Friedman regardless
Hell most teachers have never heard of Friedman
edit: it's easier to have a cultural impact if you have a Nobel Prize
I doubt she's heard of any other Nobel laureates in economics, other than Krugman.
There was something about the culture of the early Cold War that actually elevated people like Friedman and Rand to the status of public intellectual (and there were lots of other interesting public intellectuals back then). Today, anyone interesting is run out of polite society.
Hope she likes Friedman more than Krugman!
Not likely. It was very surprising to me that she held a positive impression of Friedman.
of couse she does
I have to say, one of the best biographies/obituaries of Milton Friedman was written by Krugman
This was in 2006 or 2007
Polite society left in 2014 or earlier
edit: Friedman also wrote a monthly column for Newsweek in the 1970s
That's a decent place to date it, although I don't feel like there had been any interesting public intellectuals for quite a while before that.
That wasn't the point of the anecdote.
