I finally noticed - I've gotten some tiny transactions on-chain, in my first ever dust attack.

What's something useful - some bitcoin friendly place to donate to?

Would that be a safe thing to do? Why/why not?

Don't mix the dust UTXOs that you have received in different addresses. Sending together all the dust received would signal that those addresses belong to the same person.

Wasabi Wallet has a setting that automatically hides dust attack coins below a configurable value:

You can always just spend the entire thing with an OP_RETURN message of your choice so that it doesn't bloat the UTXO set.

I've frozen them. But I just want to get rid of them, though, to make sure I don't somehow (maybe after opening with a different wallet, where they're not marked frozen) mix them with my real UTXOs.

So, I'd prefer to get rid of them.

If I remember right, there's some "dead end" addresses I could sent them to, where they can't be sent? Carefully, managing it so there's no change address?

reply

It looks like I could just donate to Tor, they show a bitcoin address:

https://donate.torproject.org/cryptocurrency/

Can anyone think of privacy risks to this, if I:

  • have zero change
  • only sent the dust UTXOs, nothing else

Sending them together is the highest privacy risk. Don't do that.

What if they're all on the same address?

Then it should be OK.

However...in thinking this through...

It doesn't really MATTER if I send the dust UTXOs to some donation address (assuming I follow the checks that I mentioned)...

IF...I then follow up by sweeping the ENTIRE old wallet, including the address that has been dust attacked, to a new set of addresses?

Because if they're following the old bitcoin address, if I were to send all the utxos in one transaction, they'd be linked?

So I should really just send the dust-attacked bitcoin address ALONE to new addresses?

I'd prefer to get rid of them.

If you process them in one go, you create a time heuristic
If you process them all the same, you create a pattern heuristic.

Don't touch them. The only reason these exist is to do heuristics against you and de-anonymize your wallet.

reply

Don't spend it.

Personally, when I get this I lock the outputs of the dust (in coin-control / whatever its called in your wallet) and it just sits there forever.

reply

I strongly recommend you be very careful.

reply

Just now?!? Sheesh, I get dust-attacked daily. Ignore, mute, block, whatever to take off the active view of the wallet.
