I've lived in heavily wooded areas with poorly maintained (or impossible to maintain) infrastructure, and... Losing power once a week was grating after a while. Didn't get used to it.
Perhaps what made it so annoying was the lack of communication on ETA. It was anyone's guess if it came back within 15min, 3 hours or 24 hrs. And even when an ETA was given, it was wrong most of the time.
Makes it hard to plan around it when it's so random. Do I go buy food ? Go to resto? Do I tell my boss in taking the whole day off? When the lights come back, do I have time to start a meal prep or laundry or get caught again midway and lose everything? Oh yeah because sometimes it was a chain of power outages like that.
Tldr: 0/10 would be mad every time unless it was a scheduled thing.
If you can set up a small solar system or even just a battery which you charge off the mains when there is power it could make life more comfortable.
We live 100% offgrid with a 5 kw/h battery based solar system that cost about $2500usd all up (including a very efficient fridge freezer) - no more power bills...ever!
Do use a woodstove for cooking and heating in winter, but gas which we use in summer is an alternative.
I think it was 2016 when we had a bad winter windstorm here. It took out a bunch of pine trees, which knocked out powerlines. The whole city was out of power for some time. Our house was without power for almost two weeks. That was not fun. I got used to taking cold showers and keeping warm at the fireplace.
My family has a generator so we would get enough electricity to charge our phones, but my computer was down for most of the time and I really missed it.
There were some pros to having no power. I got to chop a lot of wood for the fireplace, and I found that activity enjoyable. I also ate more meals with family which was not something that I normally do very often.
Everyone was doing extra chores to keep the house running and that caused extra stress. We butted heads during that time. That emotional distress was probably worse than anything else.
If the power went out for 5 hours a day, that would get very annoying. I think I'd have to come up with a way to operate on battery power for those 5 hours. Lately I replaced my computer's UPS battery. I think it will give power for 2-3 hours, but I'm not sure it's big enough for 5. They can be expensive to upgrade so that could be a big headache.
