This is a really cool interview. My Takeways:
- Craig is a really humble guy.
- The site started off as a hobby project
- Wanted to keep access to the site as cheap as possible thus the simple design
- He wanted to call the site something else it was the users and developers who urged him to call it Craigslist
- Avoided the dot com crash and never went public
- Never tracked traffic metrics due to poor incentives and keeping scammers at bay
- Knew his limitations and hired CEO
- Left the company 7 years ago when he realized he wasn’t useful.
- Put all his equity into a charity structure to give away at least 50% of his wealth
- Given away about $500M to date with a goal of reaching $1B
- His passionate causes are vets and preventing scams on the internet.
Really cool interview for all those who might be curious about Craigslist.
Who knows maybe SN will be the Craigslist in the bitcoin era of the internet!
Craigslist was a fun site back in the day.
