Yeah, the only case where I like the idea of downzapping is content that you're confident is an attempt to harm others.
Any good faith expression of ideas, no matter how silly, should be allowed to sink or swim on its own merits (or lack thereof).
It's pretty obvious that there is a massive correlation between boosts and downzaps. Which comes first (chicken and egg style) is difficult, but they very tightly tied.
So it seems to me that we need to discuss downzapping as it relates to boosting (self-zapping). Any changes that might be made to downzapping would need to take into account boosting behavior and perhaps changes to boosting.
It doesn't take many people who hate boosting to create that correlation.
yes, but when we are discussing downzapping, I don't think it's actually about general content curation or punishing -- it's that there are a few stackers who think excessive boosting should be counteracted.
I think the downzap situation is clearly a phenomenon that is tied to what is perceived to be excessive boosting. I don't think downzaps in general have been used enough to really even have much data about how they work.
I think my arguments are just as relevant to those who want to counteract large boosts. That can be done by knocking them down or by lifting others up. It's not obvious to me that downzapping is the best way to go about evening the playing field.
To me downzappers are like rabid dogs. Logic doesn't get involved. They bite and bite hard with little consideration for restraint. Most of it is politically oriented for a given stream of thought and stomping out alternative or opposite view, period (which is unfortunately all too common today). For those who have dealt with me, you know I will get into a vigorous debate on some topics, but I won't ever drop your opinion. You might insult me and I might block you, but that's my own preference of what I want to put up with. Downzapping is intentionally blocking a post from everyone, even if not directly involved, or at least trying to.
