Saying that the claims are a worn-out lie that has been used before is an interesting statement. In 2017, a Houthi ballistic missile did, in fact, head towards Mecca and was intercepted by Saudi air defenses.... Saudi Arabia turned around and bombed the hell out of the Houthis for it.
I don't know. That 2017allegation smacks of propaganda too. Occam's Razor might apply. What possible good could come from targeting Mecca? Why make the whole region an enemy?

Despite the Saudis paying billions for decades to the US for military supplies, training and protection, the USA has put the Saudis into a war they never wanted.
The Houthis are running rings around the Saudi backed Yemen government which is mostly residing in exile while leaving Yemen controlled on the ground primarily by ISIL and AlQueda on the side of the Yemen government and the Houthis on the other.
So the mighty USA is here aligned with ISIL and AlQueda- will Trump send troops in to fight with them against the Houthis?
The whole fiasco stinks of the truth about US militarism- it is all about US control over global resources. Mostly OIL.
And more recently Israels ownership and control of US military- toward the objective of The Greater Israel Project to expand territory and control over most of the middle east.

The Saudis must be wondering whether they would be safer and more prosperous if they were to instead form a regional alliance rather than reliance upon the US since the US is exposed as increasingly ineffective against both Iran and Russia and their China backed asymmetric challenges to US military backed petrodollar hegemony.
