I generally try not to blame people who ridicule the mentaly ill. It seems to come as a normal response when one doesn't understand it. There were even points in my early life when I thought it was a bit silly. An academic understanding only gets you so far. Knowing what it is like, is similar to having seen a new color, it incredibly difficult to convey. It's like the mental equivalent have having a kidney stone, everyday, all day. "how bad can it be?", until you experience it yourself.

My condolences for your former classmate.

You have just used the most accurate comparison there is. For us, trying to understand the pain of depression is like trying to imagine a new color. We don't know what a person is feeling or thinking unless we are in their shoes, which is why it is best not to judge.
