I agree with you, and that is exactly why $42 feels almost meaningless in a case like this. Once sensitive data is leaked, there is no clear limit to the damage it could cause later. You do not know who will get access to it, how long it will circulate, or how it might be used years from now. That uncertainty is the biggest problem for me. A small payment cannot really compensate for a risk with no clear end point.

You definitely can't put the genie back in the bottle!  Who knows how much damage it will do when the right people get ahold of it.  Then again, these breaches happen so often lately, and so many third parties sell my data that I'm not even sure how private I should consider this info anymore.
