my wife worked for the last ten years and I was the primary caregiver for the kids. the burden of babies certainly falls more heavily on women than men (eg breastfeeding, the way pregnancy totally alters your body), but once you get past the first 6 months, it can be fairly equal. A lot depends on your partner and how they approach parenting.
Don't you constantly worry about where the kids are, what they're doing, or whether they're safe, how can you still focus on learning or writing while a part of you is worrying someone else?
