tbh, I precisely do not like such designs, because I don't think webpages should be art pieces

they should let me find the info I'm looking for as quickly as I can. A website should not be "an experience". Designs like this are exactly the opposite of what I think a website is for.

reply

Do you think thing that is a website as an experience shouldnt exist? Or should it be an app or something we encounter some other way?

Kinda like: popup books are stupid and annoying. Books should be about the information, the words and all this falderal with cutouts and shapes and whatnot sucks. (Popup books are annoying -- yet I can imagine a context perhaps that is not?)

reply

of course, it's not that I think such websites shouldn't exist

but IMO, when website designers are given awards for this kind of design, what happens is that companies hire "award winning" designers, who then turn their company websites into experiences rather than useful places to find information

reply

Fuck, LinkedIn is depressing. Why did I bother checking there today?

Mostly academics in my timeline. Lots of people complaining about the use/abuse of AI in peer reviews, articles, etc... yet, these same people generate their rants using AI. Random example:

We got a review back from a high-impact journal. Out of curiosity, I gave the paper to Claude and asked it to write a referee report. Then I put the two side by side. For one of the two reviewers, the overlap was about 85%. Every point they made showed up in the model's report too, often in the same order and almost the same words. Here is the bigger issue. If a model can write a believable review of almost any paper, then "a reviewer raised objections" no longer means much by itself. And if review keeps going this way, we should be honest about what we are dealing with: LLM reviewers? Think about a manuscript reviewed by two referees, one human and one generated. A human reviewer can be convinced. You answer their concerns, they read your response, and at some point the exchange ends. An LLM can always produce one more concern. Ask it again and it finds something new. There is no point at which it runs out. So how do you ever satisfy a reviewer like that? And if the objections are always there and can never be fully answered, then what actually decides whether a paper is accepted? Not the review, because the review can go either way. So what is left? The author's name? The affiliation? Whether the group is already known in that venue? That is what worries about where research is heading. When the review stops being the thing that decides, something else quietly takes over. I would rather have a hard reviewer who reads the paper than a generated one I cannot answer.

#AISlop

"When the review stops being the thing that decides, something else quietly takes over." Yikes.

reply
reply

Another point that I haven't seen brought up much is that the AI will never stop nitpicking. If you ask it to review a paper, then revise it to address every criticism, then ask AI to review it again, it will come up with a whole new set of criticisms.

Sometimes the critiques even contradict themselves, especially when it comes down to judgment calls.

I really think the traditional model of publishing is due for a reckoning.

I hope for a future of collaborative research via open source models

reply
a future of collaborative research via open source models

That would be great. I'd prefer that so much to the anonymous review process.

If someone thinks they can make a meaningful improvement to my work, I'd rather bring them on as a co-author who I can actually interact with.

And if they think my work is utter shit, I'd rather they do the work to publish a rebuttal themselves, rather than have to seek their approval to publish my own work.

reply

Maybe we need to bring back the ralphwiggin skill for reviews so that we get all the findings at once instead of dripping them in, because I think the most annoying part, especially with recent Claude "improvements", is that it always leaves things out. I rarely get a list with more than 12-15 findings, then after addressing these, another 12-15 findings.

reply

Not sure how it is for code review, but for research review you sometimes get this cycle

  1. This finding is interesting, you are selling it too short, you should emphasize it more!

--> go back and emphasize that result

  1. You are overselling this result. Your interpretation is not justified by the evidence. Tone down your claims!
reply

Those typically occur in the same round of reviews by different reviewers.

I have yet to have the same reviewer give me that feedback in successive rounds.

reply

I've had it on a bug a week and a half ago. The first review told me "this is incomplete so add xyz", the second (after implementing it) said "remove xyz because it goes against spec".

reply

oh. Yeah that's different for me. I expressly ask for evidence, and often even don't ask for solutions. There's still a similar symptom, but just like I don't argue with bots, I really do not give 2 shits about the opinion of a bot. Execute the task, and hup hup.

Oooo loot of the day combined into one post!

been working on the business plan a little today. will post an update with a roadmap soon as mentioned a few times.

hit another little slowdown but things picking up again now. starting to get my head into the roadmap and business aspects and once that's done my mind will be on purely on tackling the loot upgrade and finishing the plunda.co HQ bathroom. it currently has no toilet 😡 pulled everything out and need to rebuild it now. will show this DIY in a future vid

i wish i could move things along faster but life and other obligations keep coming up and my time and energy is limited. we'll get there tho!

reply

Hey hey @plunda look at this!

The loot into the void got a response!!! 😌

reply

also i wanted to mention, the other day i had a quick look at the user database table there's a steady uptick slowly but surely. numbers aren't massive, but every few days a new user signs up and and has a look around. some of them just eat their free chocolate and then disappear, others really get stuck in and explore. it helps massively when they win a voucher code on their first login, my assumption being that they then feel they more invested and have some real value in their account straight away which opens up a lot more features to them.

once the loot upgrade is complete, it'll unlock so many things that are blocked by it, one of those is being able to give users more loot on their first login so that they can start experimenting and playing right away. i'd love to give users free coins on their first login! but right now it'd open the door for too much abuse where malicious users could keep making new accounts and create an infinite free money loop. but as part of the loot upgrade i'll have built in a much more dynamic loot engine that'll allow me to gift more valuable free loot, but lock accounts until they have passed a certain threshold, etc.

and of course, the loot upgrades will unlock direct coin gift vouchers, where specific coins can be turned into vouchers. which will be useful for onboarding new people too, i know you've asked for that one several times.

reply

wheeey!!! that's awesome hahaha so you're cross posting all the drops on nostr at the same moment as you post on SN right?

p.s. won't be having any new coins drop for a while because i had to leave Barcelona for a bit. but I'll be listing those already photographed for sale, or adding to the prize pools while im out of the city, and doing computer work. and when I'm back I'll fix up the bathroom in HQ and get the next progress video out!

Howdy, partners. 🀠

I’ve spent the last damn 3 years building and promoting https://instagfollowers.shop/?utm_source=chatgpt.com. I did the SEO, built a proper site, kept the prices about 30% lower than my competitors, and honestly made it look better than most of them.

And Google still won’t let me into the damn top 30 for a decent high-volume keyword. πŸ˜‚

At this point I’m not asking for the #1 spot. Just let me into the top 30 so I can afford some food. πŸ€ πŸ”

What the hell am I doing wrong?
