All four of my grandparents were Italian immigrants, but they didn't identify as Italian. They identified themselves from their region, even though Garibaldi had supposedly unified Italy.

Interesting. My Italian grandparent, and that side of the family, did identify as Italian more than the region they came from.

My guess is your grandparent was younger than mine. They came to the U.S. between 1910 and 1930

That's when his family came, but he was actually the first one born in America.
