Days? It's been like this since Million Sat Madness.

That's exactly when SN started to go a bit off, it is still fun but less fun.

SN is still fun but less fun

Kinda tracks with bitcoin more broadly

I actually think it's a good idea to build a niche community these days when everyone wants to build the next social media platform. Let's say if people want to learn about Bitcoin, then being pointed to SN, much powerful!

reply

I totally agree. The growth I want to see is mostly luring back some of the fun stackers of previous eras.

reply

why do you think they left?

reply

Mostly, my sense is that they found other things to focus their time on, which is some combination of boredom with Stacker News and interest in other stuff.

Ideally, they’d want to pursue those new things and share them with us, so the overarching solution is to make SN a more rewarding place to hang out.

There were also the two (now possibly three) big rage quit episodes: MSM, CCs, and Spark.

reply

life certainly finds a way to get in the way

do you remember any specific nyms that ragequit over MSM or CCs though?

reply

Well, @supertestnet was probably the biggest CC blowup.

Ragequit might be a bit strong for other, but I do recall many people souring on SN and becoming less active during those events. Some have come back, if only infrequently.

i secretly think they are still lurking here.

reply

I stopped being active like three years ago. SN is awesome but real life is way better. I definitely lurk though, and sometimes I'll have bursts of activity. I doubt I'm the only one.
