I don't know much about gaming conventions or the industry, but the idea of leaving sensitive equipment in a convention hall overnight to me seems like an automatic no, regardless of promised security. I feel for the dev here, but I would balk at anyone telling me to just leave stuff to hope it was there the next day.

I mean, it sucks... but in the grand scheme of things it's a pretty trivial expense relative to all the other costs of game development. And I hope they kept their code backed up somewhere... if not they have bigger problems.
