And we are all playing the game where we try to trick ourselves into believing that in our special specific circumstance, what would otherwise be falling for a scam is actually us pulling one over on the big companies: sure, we know they don't lose money on loyalty programs...but in our own case, with our own specific spending pattern, we're the ones who come out ahead.
It's not such a different belief than that you can beat the house at a casino.
