The milestone came just five months after US debt hit a previous record of $39 trillion in March, and arrived earlier than forecasters had expected, driven in part by billions of dollars in lost revenue from President Donald Trump’s invalidated tariffs, which forced the Treasury to borrow more rapidly to cover government bills.

President Donald Trump says the US is launching “the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY”.
In a Truth Social post, Trump said “No one has given the Islamic Republic of Iran a greater opportunity to make a Deal than me”, adding that “TRAGICALLY, for them, they have failed to take it.”
He stated that “Therefore, today, I am announcing the MOST CRUSHING ECONOMIC OPERATION EVER TAKEN AGAINST ANY COUNTRY!” and warned that “This will be Economic Warfare and Isolation on an unprecedented scale.”
He repeated his claim that “Their navy is gone, their air force is destroyed, their military factories are now rubble, their currency is worthless, and their country is hanging by a thread.”

He added, “You know who you are,” warning that “This will be an ECONOMIC D-DAY,” and called on allies “to stand with the United States of America to isolate, and defeat, the Iran threat.”
