HWI has been the main way to use a hardware wallet with Bitcoin Core. It looks like Ava Chow will be aiming to step back from it eventually, concluding with a final release supporting MuSig2.
HWI has been in essentially maintenance mode for the past several years as I have not had the time nor motivation to continue working on this project. This has largely been a solo project, even though it lives under the Bitcoin Core umbrella.
This project was originally intended to enable Bitcoin Core to support hardware wallets, and it has gotten us most of the way there. However limitations of Python prevent us from going all the way as we are unable to deterministic builds or ship it with Bitcoin Core.
The current plan is to finish the MuSig2 feature, then formally enter a minimal maintenance mode until a suitable drop-in replacement project is ready, at which time this repo will be archived. The BHWI looks to be a promising successor to this project.
As of right now, we will no longer be accepting any new features or feature requests, other than those required to support MuSig2. We will also no longer be accepting PRs for any new devices.
Once MuSig2 is complete, a release will be made, which will likely be the final release of HWI. Afterwards, we may make minimal changes to keep CI happy.
directly anchored link to its philosophy
End of an era, but a very pragmatic decision.
aren't there projects reimplementing the Python language for verifiable compilation and embedded targets? then folks only need worry about silly things like making sure the correct library functions are linked...
