what was your fav?
Mine was about the disappearance of the local bar.
In fact, if you'll indulge me, I'll write a little about my shining example of the neighborhood bar that belongs to the past. You see, as a fresh college grad, I accepted employment at an Irish pub in my city. My first day walking in, I thought, surely this is a mistake, because I just completed such a great thesis paper that will have lasting academic impact, what am I doing in a smelly bar pit when I don't even drink?

Folks, I learned to drink well on that job, tasting of fine whiskey and surrounded by friendly faces. My coworkers and I shared a lot of laughs, and supported each other when shit happened. And even though at the hostess stand I was often reading a novel or playing sudoku, I did care to do well and show diners a nice time. I ate so many fried pickles. I sold pints through the window when we had to close during lockdown. I pretended to care about many a sports game. I wiped menus and wistfully imagined my life as a writer. It's still the place I choose to hang out when I'm in town to get my old friends around me.

But when I return, the charm it once had is only a memory.
