Back story
I got this idea from Guild Wars 1, an MMORPG PC game that came out in 2005 which still has online servers today! In Guild Wars, when players earn significant titles, they get a shoutout in the in-game chat that denotes their achievement. Once 20 titles total are earned, the entire player base gets the "Favor of the Gods," and for 1 hour, the chance to receive rare drops (weapons and armor) get increased!
How it Works
In Bitcoin Quest, a similar process was created. When users earn badges, +1 points gets attributed to Satoshi's Favor. Once the community earns 21 points total, a Bitcoin mining game opens, where users have a random chance to earn 21,000 sats if they hash a number below the target difficulty (just like Bitcoin mining)! When the hour is up, everything resets, and the community is back at 0/21 points.
"Hashing"
All users have to do to play is press the HASH button, and a random number between 0-100,000,000 will appear. Users get 10 hashes per minute (rate limited) for the entire hour (with various bonus methods to hash faster and more often). Right now, the difficulty is set at 8,000. Therefore, if a user gets a "hash" below 8000, he/she wins 21,000 sats! In just over a month of hashing, users have generated tens of thousands of hashes, and for the lucky ones, we have paid out 13 times (273,000 sats sent to our users over Lightning).
Of course, user are not actually executing SHA-256 hashes. What we are kind of simulating is adding the nonce value to the hash calculation. But I still think it's cool!
