I called it quits today on a painting of Wilson that I began last summer. It's been in a satisfactory state hanging on my wall for a year now, but I knew he needed just a few final and precise touches. The precision scared me off for a year, I didn't want to do that part, though I knew it was required. And still, "required" is a pretty strong word for it.

Anyway, 'painting' has been on my to do list this month, and I had nothing better to do today. So I did set out all my supplies, and without much ado about it, without precision at the tip of my brush (but with precision in the paper towel I kept close to wipe mistakes), I placed those final touches.

At the start I worked with only four colors, a blue that for the life of me I could not come even close to replicating today, a pink, yellow, black and white. This limited me sufficiently, plus I used only one brush. And I liked how it kept the effect light and uniform. Adding an entirely new two colors today, a pinkish orange and burnt umber, provided the depth and contrast that was only needed in the slightest bit. So with restraint, I went in and tidied up.

Yeah, sure, maybe it looks like something's wrong with him. Maybe his eyes look like evil black orbs. That's not far off from the truth of it, you know. The black on his head is where his evil lives...since the rest of him is white, he's mostly good.

Very nice—excellent work.

I really admire people who have those kinds of talents. Sometimes I feel a bit frustrated, though; I was born into a humble family—my father was a farmer and my mother barely finished the sixth grade... back home, all we knew was working the land. As a boy, I never really had any exposure to the arts, aside from a little bit at school.

With my son, on the other hand, we’ve tried to foster an interest in the arts and introduce him to them; he loves designing, so who knows—maybe he’ll break that cycle.

I'm impressed! I've never messed around with paint very much (except the household variety), preferring to stick with pen and ink, but it's fun to be able to do something like this.
