Definitely happening. Johnny Mnemonic was way off the mark in terms of technology though.
the core idea is not way off, of course there are many forks in the road for the specific models... also year digits are entirely manufactured in all mainstream history books;
likewise, if we are in the 7th iteration of the matrix that usually proceeds & ends the same way (the grand destructive reset), then saying that the movie is "way off" is not very descriptive, i.e. i have no idea what u are meaning to say;

Based on this statement, if I had to guess, the physical device is real, but the demonstration was not based on automation. There was probably a human with a glove or other interface, acting as a controller.
