It's not everyday that you see a Forbes article that talks about Bitcoin and nostr and actually sounds like it has used both. DecentraSuze published a very cool article in Forbes about this upcoming film about Julian Assange called The Six Billion Dollar Man, which is going to use nostr as a release channel.

The film is now heading directly to the bitcoin community with Jack Dorsey’s backing. On June 27, 2026, it will hold a global online screening, with access paid for in bitcoin and distributed through Nostr.

I've seen posts about this on nostr before, but hadn't looked into it too deeply. It's a pretty cool story. The film's director, Eugene Jarecki, couldn't get any of the big distribution platforms to take on the film:

“Financial sovereignty moves hand in hand with freedom of information,” he said at BTC Prague. “The same gatekeepers who do not want the public to have financial sovereignty are the same gatekeepers who do not want the public to have the right to information.”
This release model turns the audience into part of the distribution system. Viewers are being invited to play a role in the release. Early supporters paying 0.01 BTC (roughly $600 - $760 depending on the exchange rate) can become credited producers, fund the film, spread the word and help bring it to more people.

I wonder how well such a system will work. But it's very cool to see this kind of press and I think I know what I'll be doing Saturday.

Hmm, I think being credited as "producer" simply because you gave money for a film that's already been made, feels a bit strange. I don't think I'd do it, even if I wanted to support the film or the bitcoin ecosystem more generally. Probably the biggest hesitation is that I don't know what's in the film, and whether I could stand behind all its content. I wouldn't want to sign on and get producer credits, only to later find out that I object to certain aspects of the film.

no kidding! I agree with you. It feels like they wanted to do v4v but were worried that it wouldn't really work and so they tried to come up with a flashy new idea.

I like the subject matter though and would be willing to pay to watch it.

Not backers. Producers.

Nice words and all.

But unless people who pay that much get a say in what is created they're not producers.
And if they don't get a return if the movie is profitable, they're not even backers.

Just call it what it is.
