More than a decade has passed since I have left Japan, but the iconic Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival still occupies a rent-free space in my mind. My vivid impressions are likely due to the elaborate and vibrant floats that capture my attention and leave me spellbound, eagerly lapping up their intricate details.
These floats are not only rich in Japanese folklore, but also showcase the best of Japanese architecture. Similar to Kintaikyo Bridge in Yamaguchi, traditional methods are used in the construction of the floats. Not a single nail is used; instead, ropes are utilised to hold the various wooden pieces and bamboo poles in place. Doll makers are also roped in, which means that travellers can understand the characters in vogue in contemporary Japan in one glance.
Those Hakata outfits are wild!
