Good writing isn’t just information transfer. You can usually feel when someone has actually wrestled with an idea.

I think I agree, but I'm trying to get at the idea that information isn't like a specific set of bits that are transferred to our minds -- what get from good writing is a new mindset. If we want to use computers as an analogy for our minds, good writing isn't like a piece of data we download, it's new programming. But this isn't even a very good analogy. It's that our minds can't hold certain information unless some things in the state of our mind are changed. I'm doing a poor job conveying this, but I think it's very important.

I get what you mean. Good writing doesn’t just pass information, it changes how we think so the idea can actually stick.
