I read this in April of 2025, and never had the chance to write about it until now. I thank the publisher for the advance copy!

Marie Lu is one of the best authors of her time and is truly underrated in every sense of the world. Red City is a stunning adult debut featuring an alternate Los Angeles giving all the Full Metal Alchemist Vibes where rival gang syndicates are fighting for control over the city.
Sam and Ari, the pivotal characters of the novel, take on their journey’s to becoming alchemists in their own right. Former childhood friends with a close relationship, little did they know the worst is yet to come for their adult selves.
I loved this novel in a plethora of ways.
Firstly, the worldbuilding was stunning. Like Lu’s debut Legend Trilogy, it reminded me of a dystopian-esque L.A., but in a futuristic, upscale contemporary sense. I loved the minute details of some key locations across the city being kept, as well as new ones. The secrecy of the Red City itself was also amazing to read. Might I also add notes about the magic system? I think the literal bodily immersive parts of it were so intricate to read about too because it reminded me of some really cool science.
The side characters are always knocked out of the park with Lu’s writing. Will Taylor (oh my lord) might be one of my favorites of hers because he reminds of the angsty and mysterious men I love to read about. Diamond Taylor (Will’s Mother), also has issues of her own. Just both interesting characters to read about who are morally grey.
Plotwise? Yes. Yes. YES!!! Ari and Sam’s respective paths were one of the key parts I liked about this book because it shows both the trauma and familial hardships they needed to face in order to rise up into their respective syndicates. I think another thing I feel I related to was Sam’s invisibility and how everyone around never noticed her. I would like to think that this is a greater part of her alchemy abilities, just like how everyone sees and notices Ari 24/7. Easter Eggs from Lu’s other books make their appearance (mentions of Nannerl and Mozart EEEK) but for a brief and very exciting few seconds.
Overall, this was a great read and Marie Lu will forever be the number one author I look forward to. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for the second book!!!
I enjoy books that are devotes to a city, but that also imagine the city in a mother life. I haven't read any of Marie Lu's work, but I'll definitely have to check this out.
That's a strong recommendation
I’ve never heard of the author but you sold me on it. Alchemy dystopian future, I’m in. Thank for the review I’m definitely going to read this book.
