I went out of bliss mode for 30 minutes this morning (by reading SN on my phone) and I noticed that, once again, stackers are being asked to volunteer information about themselves to prove that they are innocent of some made up crime.
There are multiple things wrong with the ordeal but first let me tell y'all about when I first saw this pattern and why this is not an isolated incident:
About a year or so ago, a stacker was tricked into proving their identity. For hours they were repeatedly accused of lying and asked for evidence to disprove the accusation. They ended up making a picture of a security pass with their name, mugshot, job title and security clearance on it and posting it to SN. Luckily this is deleted now and SN's cleanup process also deletes the images if they're no longer referenced. But it happened. I saw the pic. I even warned against it prior, but the stacker did it regardless. Because they were being accused hard, hounded even, and their pride got in the way of their common sense.
Going back to the current situation: currently stackers are being asked to doxx their SN wallet stats under the accusation that they are downzapping political posts. By the same stacker that did the prior occurrence I just described. Let's break it down:
- The downzapping of posts is labeled as if it is a crime (which is funny, because the accuser is the biggest downzapper of all time, continuously using the word "hypocrite" at that) That means that this is a non-issue: it is made up by a sociopath.
- Random stackers that the accuser dislikes are being accused of this, without any evidence. This is the world upside down; everyone is innocent until proven guilty. This twist of basic rules is very convenient for the accuser and apparently no one calls it out.
- There is a reason why your wallet stats and spending behavior are only visible to you: it is called transactional privacy. Your zaps are between you and SN, not for everyone else to look at. If you're breaking this, why are you using LN in the first place?
You're being asked to volunteer private information to some dude that actively campaigns against other stackers, spreads lies, will forget about someone's innocence whenever convenient to them. There are only 2 words in a possible reply to this request and it starts with an f and ends in uck off.
I urge every stacker to not give in. Just ignore it. Say no. Mute. You're being played and there is no good intention here. Instead what will happen is that anything you voluntarily provide will be abused either now or in the future.

One of the strongest defenses any was online is just to ignore assholes. It often works better than most other options.

Downzapping isn't the cause of this. People are the cause of this. The overall phenomenon, where people feed their sociopathic needs on sowing discord and societal upheaval is very common to small communities and it is easy to recognize once you've experienced it a couple of times.
Sometimes, it can be calmed down. In this case, I'm quite sure it will not. Every instance of possible drama will be joined or if there is none to join, made. This is the nature of the beast. Therefore I usually just ignore hard because it's all asking for attn. But, in this case I saw a repetition of a predatory pattern, so I thought I'd at least try to put out a reminder to not engage with this shit.

It’s so easy to let ego take the wheel when someone challenges our integrity, but as you pointed out, the trap is the engagement itself.
Is this bullshit still going on? Apparently I'm way out of the loop with SN because I haven't come across this since that post about horses and guns visible.

In this case the person concerned was saying they work in US government in Washington and using that claim to support their argument. As it is a difficult claim to substantiate I challenged them to prove it and bet 10000 sats they could not- believing them to be making a claim they would not substantiate. I had no desire they dox themselves beyond the extent of verifying the claim made. They did so by showing their selfie in the building and I paid the bet. That impressed me and the fact that a US govt employee can both speak openly on SNs and stands by and backs his claims when challenged.
While I rarely agree with that stacker I do hugely respect his integrity and honesty and have many times engaged in good faith reasoned debate since on many issues.
In fact when this current furore about who is downzapping all anti war posts came up his nym was mentioned but I highly doubted he would actin such a way. He is always up front and clear in his views and does not hide them. Again I respect that. His spending stats which like most stackers, are not concealed, show conclusively he could not be the downzapper Zionist censor.
In the current situation someone is deliberately downzapping into oblivion any views posted questioning and exploring the current war in the Middle East. They are not explaining their reasons, they have deliberately concealed their TOP stats to make it impossible to identity who they are.
Another stacker who is also a strong and vocal supporter of the war (but conceals their TOP stats) was asked to show their SN spending graph and did so showing they are not the downzapper- they cleared their name and received 2000 sats from me in appreciation.
Their is only one stacker who has concealed TOP stats who earns enough sats here to be the downzapper. They have also voiced disdain of posts about the war. They have a consistent style of sardonic critque of others (mostly MSM writers) but very strongly avoid any engagement in reasoned debate of their assertions.
This stacker has been asked to show their recent spending stats graph showing their nym to remove any suspicion...but refuses to do so...despite an offer of 10000 sats to do so.
Showing your SN wallet stats does not doxx you.
It does not reveal anything that is not openly available in TOP stats to anyone looking at most SN profiles except those where a stacker has chosen to conceal their wallet stats.
It just shows how many sats you have spent in the last day, week, month or year, and on what.
The downzapper refuses to identify their nym because what they are doing is deliberately obstructing any questioning of the war in middle east.
They know to be revealed would considerably discredit goodwill they may have in the SN community- except perhaps that coming from hardline religious bigots and supporters of Israels genocides and war crimes.

When people hide their motives good faith reasoned dialogue is undermined.
It seems to me that Stacker News is actively enabling the censorship of content and the concealment of the downzapper.
I would have zero issue with the downzapper spending upwards of 500,000 sats to suppress any dialogue about the war - if they were open about why they are downzapping.
But they are not.
