Because now that I have a successful chat with you, all of us have this. We can use something else too. (Also, I'm working with the SN team on a native encryption project so this ought to be temporary :-)

Because you encrypt key packages regardless of the wire encryption. Never rely on transport layer security alone, because that would put the key material unencrypted in your phone/laptop memory every time you open the chat. OpenSSL is fine too.. just need some form of file encryption.
