but you also hate getting 8000 dick pics in your feed.
the problem isn't who is doing the moderation (human or algo or AI).
it's is the moderation any good. and do you have any say in how it works.
with nostr and usenet you have full user agent privileges.

very important for this conversation

Sounds like:
The problem isn't who controls speech.
it's is the control doing what you like.
I don't believe it can be done better than what we've seen. That's why I'm here. Perhaps money can work better at moderation.
I don't expect, however, that courts will note the distinction.
it's not even the control doing what you like. It's you being in control.
Or at least having the option of trying to be in control.
Protocols with clients that reapect the user agent metaphor give you that option. Bitcoin is one such protocol, email is another, and nostr is one as well.
SN is not. I love stacker news but it is what it is: a centralized commercial platform, just like tik tok and facebook.
Last time I looked nostr content discoverability and basic usability was a shit show. That's why I use stacker news more and nostr not much.
I could imagine a future where stacker news is an opinionated nostr client that respects the user agent metaphor but also gives good usability like we currently have.
It's all fantast for now. Chances of s230 repeal anytime soon is nil. But I like to have an optimistic vision and that's mine.
optimistic visions are good.
I'm curious what you think of this scenario:
SN runs a relay like primal. All accounts on SN are just key-pairs. Would such a setup be better than the current one where SN does not run a relay nor automatically publish all items as nostr events (although, stackers can currently enable cross-posting to nostr)?
Very interesting question. Actually 2 questions (at least).
- what if SN runs a nostr relay
- what if SN runs a nostr client, with delegated custody of nostr secrets
I think 1 isn't that interesting actually, there are lots of nostr relays.
For 2, I am not that deep in the nostr world so idk, are there other or many other nostr clients running on the delegated custody model? How is that going?
I think there is also
3) what if SN runs as a nostr client, ignoring custody issues.
I think when phrased as 3) it is clear that probably the pragmatic answer is that SN is better running as it does because while idealistic, nostr is a shit show.
I also remember SN is a business and I don't really understand the business model of being a nostr client, although I guess somehow there is one.
Anyway I think the federated WoT future will have to be won on its own merits, not riding on the coat tails of projects like SN, no matter how seemingly ideologically aligned they might be.
Personally, I hate human moderation.
