After lunch I often floss to get the food out of my teeth.

Instead of going to the bathroom and flossing there I do it right at my cubicle desk. It’s pretty much private back here but my work colleague to my right can see me flossing.

Is this rude? Should I do this in the bathroom?

I'd say it's awkward - but rude is a stretch. Plus, most people don't floss so it's nice you're reminding them to take care of themselves.

reply

Eh precisely

I prefer clipping my toenails on my work desk

Are you a safe distance away so you aren’t flinging spittle on him?

reply

Very far away

reply

Not only should you floss your own teeth at your desk, you should offer to floss your colleagues' teeth.

Not "rude" just disgusting, and you should def do this in the bathroom. Plus, better flossing with the mirrors there

I would not do it. Bathroom is acceptable and what I would do.

I think it depends on the office situation. In a mostly private cubicle? That’s probably fine. Open office? Kinda gross. But here’s the real question - what do you do with the floss (pick) when you’re done? I used to work with a person that kept a floss pick on their desk that they seemed to reuse for an unknown period of time. That was pretty nasty

reply

I throw the floss out. My cube is pretty private.

I remember it being rude to openly floss in Asia. You don't need to go to the bathroom, just cover your mouth with your other hand.

reply

I don't care if people do it, but I wouldn't because I know it bugs some people.

the main thing I think of is whether you wash your hands after. If you are putting your hands in your mouth, I'd be a little uncomfortable shaking hands when you were done (or now I'm imagining someone flossing and then going to press buttons on a communal printer...)

but flossing is good.

reply

I like this point. Maybe after I floss I use some hand sanitizer

reply

maybe just floss with hand sanitizer?
