It is self custody only if you run the lightning pub yourself. For all your friends and family who you sign up you are a custodian. Also, I found nostr messaging not a reliable channel of communications. Sometimes it was frustrating...

I see you point. This setup is more focus on custodian on the lightning side and start getting used to self custody. Only if just your password to access the account. Managing your own passwords has been a huge step for some.
Nostr is growing. free is ok, but for more stable connections paid relays are available.
