$188,000 for the ship to cross. Apparently it's cheaper since we're not going through to the pacific. How many sats is that?

Is that just because of the ships size? Or is it flat rate for ships of all sizes?

reply

Apparently the price is set using all kinds of factors. Ship's size, weight, type of cargo, time of day, time of year. I think the record was like 4 million bucks for a Japanese ship that wanted to skip to the front of the line during covid. Kind of like paying a big transaction fee to get it done quickly 😀

Interesting. Seems like a good incentive model for ships who need to get where they’re headed in a hurry.

reply

Yes. The costs seem all over the map and they're tough to predict. The ship I am on estimated a price of close to half a million dollars. 188k is apparently a bargain.

Does that money go to Panama or the US?

reply

I'm not sure. Panama owns the canal, but I think various entities are involved in running it.
