The Kansas City Chiefs organization said on Tuesday that it has selected two design firms – MANICA and Populous – as finalists for the team's new $3 billion domed stadium in Kansas City, Kansas.

The Chiefs announced the move from their current home in Kansas City, Missouri, back in December. `In addition to the stadium, the team is also building a new headquarters and training facility in Olathe, Kansas, and both the stadium and headquarters/training site will feature mixed-use components.’

Planned as a public-private partnership with the state of Kansas, 40% of the stadium cost will be covered by private funds, while state sales tax and revenue (STAR) bonds and the Attracting Professional Sports to Kansas Fund will pay the balance.

"We're thrilled to take this next step in our new stadium journey and announce the two finalists in our search for lead designer," said Chiefs President Mark Donovan. "The Kansas City region is the central hub of global sports and entertainment venue architecture and design, so we didn't need to go far to identify the top options to explore final concepts for the future home of Chiefs Kingdom."

Both MANICA, based in Kansas City, Kansas, and Populous, based in Kansas City, Missouri, have significant, successful experience with major sports stadium and arena projects.

MANICA's projects include the New Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Oklahoma City's new arena, Chase Center in San Francisco and Miami Freedom Park in Miami.

"Our entire team would be thrilled to partner with the Kansas City Chiefs to help bring their new home to life," said David Manica, president and owner, MANICA. "... Every element will be approached with intention, ensuring a bold and modern design that not only honors the team's legacy but creates an even better game-day experience for all of Chiefs Kingdom."

Populous' projects include New Highmark Stadium in Buffalo, New York and the Sphere in Las Vegas.

"For more than 40 years, Populous has proudly called Kansas City home," said Scott Radecic, co-founder and global director of Populous. "From here, we have redefined modern sports venue design, creating iconic places that unite communities and transform how fans connect with their teams and each other."

Project officials have not yet provided a construction timeline but expect the stadium to be ready in time for the 2031 NFL season. The state estimates that the construction phase of the project will create more than 20,000 jobs and create a more than $4.4 billion economic impact for Kansas
